Walking as Art: the Art of Walking

Free workshop over two sessions

June 8 and 15, 2025, 10:00-12:00

Langdale Heights area (exact meeting place will be given after registration.

Experience mindful walking and forest bathing combined with a variety of creative approaches to experience nature using the senses. We will walk through the forest, stop to listen, touch, and smell our surroundings. there will be a range of prompts using art materials provided and encountered along the way. We will focus on the different senses and engage with earth, water, and air. We will meet in the same place for both sessions, going a little deeper with our observations and explorations on the second day. The outcome will be a new way of considering walking as an art medium in itself and how we can engage it as a process of experiencing our surroundings in new ways. Walking will be combined with tangible art making such as sketching, photography, and sound recording.

This workshop is intended for adults. Children are welcome too, but must be accompanied by an adult. No experience necessary.

This workshop is funded by Neighbourhood Small Grants.

Encaustic Workshop

May 31, 11:00am – 1:00pm, $50 includes all materials including a jar of cold wax medium to take home.

Encaustic is one of the oldest painting mediums used on a portable surface such as a wood panel or canvas.

This workshop introduces the method of painting with hot wax and pigment.

Participants will learn how to build layers quickly, layering for texture as well as the interplay of colours in transparent and opaque layers. We only use beeswax, no synthetic wax, and we will do this outside.

The cold wax medium is incredibly versatile. We will use citrus thinner to make this, otherwise, we won’t be using any solvents.

To register, please email Helena Wadsley at hwadsley@telus.net before May 25. Space is limited. The location is in Langdale. Payment is by e-transfer.

Helena Wadsley teaches painting at Langara College and Emily Carr University. She began teaching workshops from her home in Langdale in 2024. To register or ask questions, send an email to hwadsley@telus.net.
